«RUSSIA IS A COUNTRY THAT NEEDS AN AMBITIOUS GOAL»
Vitaly Mutko on the 2018 FIFA World Cup
– Russia had never hosted such a big sports event before. As well as the 11 World Cup host cities, other cities were involved in terms of team base camps and the training sites. When we were getting ready for this World Cup, we realised that the whole world would be fixated on Russia for an entire month. This would provide a wonderful opportunity to showcase our country and, of course, do a lot for our people. The World Cup legacy is enormous. It includes not only the stadiums, but also airports, roads, transport, energy and hospitals. Russian people were open and welcoming hosts at the World Cup. Our guests thoroughly enjoyed themselves in Russia, which was the result of the work undertaken by millions of people – all unsung heroes – including security personnel, volunteers, stewards and transport service employees. We had a dream to provide the world with a true celebration of football and we did just that. Russia is a country that thrives on having an ambitious goal to galvanise itself into action.
